"Hummingbird with Petunias"
This is a photograph from my "Best Of" collection.  It is no secret to those who follow my work that I love hummingbirds.  In fact, I have labeled this adventure "The Hummingbird Project."  Every May and June my goal is to capture the ruby-throated hummingbird in a new and fresh way.

This image is without a doubt my favorite from The  Project.  The juxtaposition of the two flowers and the hummingbird form a strong composition, locking the viewer in along the lines of the invisible triangle.  This hummingbird, a male, has amazing color and the reflection of the red gorget can clearly be seen.  The background is a clean background of local vegetation and further helps the viewer concentrate on the subject.

The problem with rabid type "A" people is that most of the time they are right, but no one actually cares about the little stuff they are right about. Most of what they go on and on about are little things that do not impact how the business or life for that matter runs.
They see others as people who "just don't care", when in fact, we see ourselves as people who care about what is important in life. Sweating the details can be very important, but in many cases it is just a waste of time that could be better spent on taking larger steps toward the goal. Type "A" people have a difficult time figuring out what is "Mission Critical" and instead drift from one issue to another, constantly working on perfection. I heard a CEO once say that perfection is the enemy of progress. I totally understand where he was coming from.
We need type "A" people in our lives to make us stop and think about little things, but in the end they are just a major pain in the behind and are the stuff grey hair and headaches are made from. Making matters worse, most of them are smug, condescending and in some cases, flaky as can be.
I don't know where I am going with all this, as there is nothing any of us can do about it, but put up with it. The flip side of all this, of course, is they see us as lazy uninterested people. So be it!

I will be out there looking at nature and absorbing all the beauty that God has for us.  I won't question God as to why he didn't make the northern cardinal brown because it makes more sense for his survival!

"Strong Soul"
This is a photograph from my "Best Of" collection.  There have been moments in my photography adventure where an image stops me in my tracks and literally helps define who I am as a photographer.  This image became that image for me.

At about twenty yards away from me, this American black bear stopped, brought her paw up to her mouth and looked right at me. In that moment I saw her eye to eye.  There are often powerful emotions that are evoked when looking into the eye of an animal or another person.  Some, in the past have called the eyes the windows to the soul.  Perhaps they are the windows to the soul, I do not know, but I do know they are full of emotion.

I entitled this "Strong Soul" because no matter if I see sadness, strength or confidence in the look, it tells me she has a strong personality.  By the way, I have never seen anger when looking into her eyes, but I do see some sadness in one of her eyes. In the other eye, I often see confidence.  One thing is certain, this bear changed me forever.

"Nesting Great Blue"
This is a photograph from my "Avian Florida" collection.  On this particular occasion, I was traveling through a wetland and noticed that there were several great blue herons, which had begun to nest among the palmetto trees.

As quickly as they had the energy to do so, they would pull sticks from one tree and fly over to their tree they were building their nest.  This was an interesting behavior to watch, so I knew I had to not only document this activity, but create something beautiful for my internet friends.  This  moment simply could not be wasted!

The image above was a culmination of my efforts that day to get just the right flight photograph.  This image perfectly describes what I saw that day and will keep the memory alive for all to see.

According to news sources across the internet, Portrait Innovations has closed its doors at many locations.  I have to say, this does not surprise me in the least. Let me dig into why this happened from a customer's perspective and add a little insight on the photography side.

Bait and Switch (Kind of)
Let me first say that I grew up with a 20 year veteran salesman as a father.  I listened when he talked about sales and how to sell right and how to sell wrong.  Recently, I have also become a student of marketing and how to market and how not to market.

Scenario- My wife entered the studio looking to do a few shots of our kids to commemorate their year in school.  Let's just call them school portraits.  From  the moment she entered the studio, they did not listen to her and pushed through their entire shoot.  It was a waste of their time and a waste of our time.  OK, so far, not too bad of an experience, right?  I mean how are they going to sell you more photos if they don't take more.  So, I get that, but it did make her annoyed.  So now you have a slightly annoyed customer.

After the shoot, she was taken back to a computer where she told the sales lady exactly what she wanted.  It went something like this.  "I want three poses in this size, this size and this size. Here is my coupon."   Oh, ok, that coupon allows you to get such and such.  It was never what the ad actually said.  Nor did they try to work with her to get her what she wanted.  It was all about pushing her to get something she couldn't afford and didn't want.

Now, totally flustered, she used me as a way to help her out of this embarrassing situation.  "My husband won't allow me to spend that much money", my wife said.   To which the sales associate said, "What a horrible husband you have! I could never be married to someone like that."  Now that is some kind of terrible sales tactic.  So now you have a frustrated, embarrassed and angry customer.  Do you really think she is ever going to buy anything extra or even come back after that treatment?

Ignoring the Customer Completely
So my wife came home and explained how terribly she had been treated.  I honestly had a hard time believing it.  She asked if I would go next time and see if I had any luck. So, I very reluctantly did just that.

Scenario - Now it was time to get my daughters "school pictures."  I arrived at Portrait Innovations and waited for them to get the room setup for the portraits.  I explained exactly what I wanted.  I wanted three poses, with these props.  So, in typical Portrait Innovations tactics, they ignored me and did an entire photo shoot.  Ugh!  So, I am patient and hold my tongue.  After all, I know how hard it is to make money as a photographer.

So, the long shoot is over and we head to the computers.  I again explain exactly what I want to purchase.  I am ignored.  Literally, she acts as if nothing I said even made it to her ears!  So she hits me with the first price, which would cost about as much as a nice used camera.  I said, "No, I want this, this and this!"  Again, she ignores me and shows me the next price.  This one is cheaper.  I said to her "No, I want this, this and this."  She then shows me another price with more poses and all kinds of images and extras I don't need.  I again say "No, I want this, this and this."

Ok, so you get the point, that goes on for a good 15 minutes.  Now, I am just angry.  I don't want to be there, and I realize I am never going back. I finally get her down to 150 bucks, and I am out of there.  Never to return.  As a salesman, you do need to try to sell extras and try to get them to like the other images, but when a customer has a hard "NO", they typically mean it.  High pressure sales works on some, but on most, it is just short term progress with customers not returning.

Conclusion
I can bet this happened to just about everyone who walked through the door.  I love photographs. I can even be convinced to buy larger packages, but not this way.  That is why they closed their doors.  The high pressure sales, combined with a shrinking portrait market killed them.  No matter how bad your sales get, ignoring or insulting a customer will get you nowhere!  That kind of behavior was just another set of holes being added to an already sinking ship.

"Great Blue Sunset"
"Great Blue Sunset" is a photograph from my "Avian Florida" collection.  There are some images that I seek after and plan.  The creative energy is flowing as soon as I realize the vision I am going after, and I work hard to make that vision reality.

"Great Blue Sunset" was designed from the outset as part of a planned vision.  It would require waiting patiently for just the right moment to present itself.  On this winter day,  the sun to began to set, and I began to quickly look for just the right bird.

I saw this great blue heron perched atop a palmetto tree, I lined up and made the exposure just as he lifted his head to the heavens.  That was the part I had not seen in my vision.  That serendipitous moment when everything comes together to make the perfect image is what keeps me walking along the wetlands and hiking the mountains year after year.

As I begin to market more of my imagery to the public, one thing strikes me more than anything else.  I like getting "Likes" on my post, but I would love some good comments!

Yes, there is a certain stroking of my ego when I receive 500 likes on an image, but this can leave me scratching my head as to why the person liked the image.  I know, I know, life is so busy that we only have a small amount of time to check out great photography on the internet.  I find myself doing the same thing.  However, in 2020, I have decided to comment more on images.  Not only does it help the artist better understand his own work and how it connects to people, it starts conversations,  Conversations are what humans need!

Don't get me wrong at all folks, I love getting likes and follows.  I guess you could say that is the bread and butter of social media.  However, even something as simple as, "Love the color on this bird" helps content providers to find other photographs that are compelling for that reason.

Finally, commenting and sharing helps me market my images better to more fine tuned audiences that would buy that work.  So why does that matter to you?  Well,  the more I can understand and sell, the better my content will be for photographers.  For example, bigger budgets for better projects, but the biggest thing it does is help me better understand you!

This image received 634 likes, but why did it?  I have no idea why they liked it.

P.S.  Feel free to text me via messenger as well!  I am always willing to connect with people who love photographer and art.  Don't forget good old email.  I send out emails fairly regularly, but I won't SPAM you!
