"Great Blue Surfside"
This photograph is from my "Avian Florida" Collection.

**********
There is a steady breeze blowing along the northern end of an island just south of Tampa Bay, Florida.  The dark blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico are calm, with slow short waves breaking on the tan colored sand.  In the distance, among the heat shimmering across the beach, I see a tall bird slowly making his way toward me.

With my Canon 1D Mark II hanging from a Black Rapid Strap, I begin walking toward the bird to get a closer view, but I soon realize, that as I move his direction, he starts moving away.  Obviously, this is not going to be an effective strategy to photograph him.

This is where many years of understanding bird behavior pays off.  Often times, shorebirds and wading birds are intimidated by a person standing up.  Perhaps it is just an innate defense mechanism built into them from the beginning of creation.  I do not know.  With a bird like this, it is best to lay down on your belly and wait.

Sure enough, almost as soon as I got down on my stomach, the heron began to approach. Once he broke 30 yards, I began shooting.  He now could see I was no threat to him and walked right past me, only about 10 yards away.  It was a great opportunity to photograph such a magnificent bird in such a beautiful setting.

"Nesting Great Blue"
This is a photograph from my "Avian Florida" collection.  On this particular occasion, I was traveling through a wetland and noticed that there were several great blue herons, which had begun to nest among the palmetto trees.

As quickly as they had the energy to do so, they would pull sticks from one tree and fly over to their tree they were building their nest.  This was an interesting behavior to watch, so I knew I had to not only document this activity, but create something beautiful for my internet friends.  This  moment simply could not be wasted!

The image above was a culmination of my efforts that day to get just the right flight photograph.  This image perfectly describes what I saw that day and will keep the memory alive for all to see.

"Great Blue Sunset"
"Great Blue Sunset" is a photograph from my "Avian Florida" collection.  There are some images that I seek after and plan.  The creative energy is flowing as soon as I realize the vision I am going after, and I work hard to make that vision reality.

"Great Blue Sunset" was designed from the outset as part of a planned vision.  It would require waiting patiently for just the right moment to present itself.  On this winter day,  the sun to began to set, and I began to quickly look for just the right bird.

I saw this great blue heron perched atop a palmetto tree, I lined up and made the exposure just as he lifted his head to the heavens.  That was the part I had not seen in my vision.  That serendipitous moment when everything comes together to make the perfect image is what keeps me walking along the wetlands and hiking the mountains year after year.
